I used to joke about God’s power when I was younger. “Can God make a stone so heavy that not even He could lift it?” Either He can (and therefore can’t lift it) or He could still lift it (and therefore can’t do this task). It was silly at the time, and yet there actually are things that are impossible for God to do.

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time. Titus 1:1-2

Paul is clear on this point. God does not lie. And yet it’s more than the fact that He doesn’t lie. The writer of Hebrews says:

… in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. Hebrews 6:18

God doesn’t lie because He can’t lie. It is actually impossible for God to lie, because it is against His very nature. So what does this have to with whether we can trust the Bible? Paul wrote to Timothy:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

While it was physically written by several authors, the Bible is “breathed out by God.” Received through human authors, it is still God’s Word. And He can’t lie.
