The church I served at in Texas had a big building campaign while I was there. We were updating the worship space, plus adding a second building of similar size. I remember watching the construction process and being surprised at how long it took to build the foundation. A flat block of concrete took forever to build!
The rest of the building went up quite quickly once the foundation was in place. A solid foundation made the rest of the project a breeze. The arduous process of building a foundation was critical to the long-term viability of the building.
Jesus talks about building our lives on the sure foundation of His Word. Maybe you’ve heard the story of two foundations—one of shifting sands, the other of solid rock. What was the difference between the two? It might surprise you:
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. … And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. Matthew 7:24, 26
Did you catch the difference in the two foundations? Both heard the word, but only one lived it. Only one heard the Word and put it into practice. You want to build a solid foundation in your life? Then put the Word into practice!
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
Are you building your life on the solid foundation of rock? Or are you living on the dangerous sand? The choice is yours: hearing or hearing plus doing?
