My wife and kids recently went into Cleveland to visit some family while I stayed behind. They left shortly after dinner one night and would return a few days later. Once they were gone, I cleaned the kitchen, sweeping up the usual food debris from our children. (Eli is especially gifted at missing his mouth and getting food on the floor.)
When they returned, Jaime commented about how nice the kitchen looked. I was taken aback because I hadn’t swept again since they left. Without kids dropping food everywhere, the kitchen floor stays remarkably clean!
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
My relationship with God is a lot like my kitchen floor. Like Eli, I seem to be especially gifted at messing it up. Despite all that He has done for me, I continually sin. But God continually cleans up after me. He continually forgives the sins I commit every day, never growing weary.
I’m sure you have the same knack for messing up your relationship with God that Eli and I both have. But I’m also sure of this: He’s cleaning up after you too. Every day, you and I return to our old selves, but every day, God makes us His new creation in Jesus.
What area of your life is God making new right now? Or what area of your life are you holding onto, refusing to allow God to sweep away the debris of sin? Maybe you feel so far from God that He can’t possibly clean your mess up. Maybe you’re struggling to clean the floor on your own. But guess what:
He’s waiting, broom in hand, ready to sweep. Look! He is making everything new!
