We’re heading to Nashville for Workcamp 2009. We’re doing a new style camp that’s primarily relational instead of home repair. It’s a smaller camp (about 100 people total) than we’ve ever done before and provides a 3rd unique summer trip in 3 years (National Youth Gathering and Home Repair Workcamp being the other 2). We’ll also be going white water rafting as a part of the trip, so it’s part service, part adventure-camp.
We had our first meeting about it yesterday and had 24 students there, plus another 15-20 parents. We could end up with 30 people on the trip this year. How awesome would that be? Registration deadline is October 19.
Trip sounds great. But I do have one frustraion. It was disappoinnting last year for the crew leaders to not be present for the VBS follow up week on Sunday. And pushing it back 3 weeks will lose energy and attendance. I’m sorry that it keeps falling the week after VBS. Could the wrap-up event be more of a reunion later?
Darcy: It is unfortunate not having the crew leaders for the post-VBS event at church. Unfortunately, there are so few weeks to choose from for Workcamp because of our late-June release from School and the 4th of July. Our options this year were the week before VBS, which would wreak even more havoc on the crew leader situation as we’d miss training events and return tired and exhausted, or we have to skip a week, pushing our trip into early August, which is difficult with family vacations.
It’s worth looking at what to do with that reunion event and possibly pushing it off a bit though. Thanks for raising it early so we can think on it some more!
One option would be to look at how we schedule the post-VBS event…raising the question early gives us all kinds of time to really reflect on the scheduling from all the angles.
