Grace Upon Grace

I was stressed out the other night while away on my trip to New Orleans for the Gathering planning meeting.  Our theme for the Gathering is “We Believe”, and draws on the book of John for it’s primary material.  Not knowing what exactly to read, I decided to start at the beginning of John and see what I found.  I was struck by John 1:16 in particular:

16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

Not only have we received grace, but grace upon grace.  It’s hard enough to understand the concept of grace, but grace upon grace?  It’s kind of mind-blowing.  As John unfolds, we see so many characters receiving this grace upon grace.

There was the bridegroom at the wedding in Cana in John 2, who’d run out of wine, only to receive grace upon grace in the form of new and better wine.

There was Nicodemus, who didn’t understand how he could be born again in John 3, but received grace upon grace when Jesus talked with him and explained how to be born again.

There was the thirsty woman of Samaria who received living water and the official whose son was healed in John 4. The 38-year invalid in John 5, healed by Jesus.  The 5,000 who were fed.  Lazarus who died and was raised.

All received grace upon grace.  The same grace upon grace that we ourselves receive.  Amazing.

Irritated, Not Excited

For two years now, we’ve made a master calendar for all youth events.  I like the idea because it helps parents plan ahead.  The down side is that when you forget to include something on the master master calendar (the one that includes all my personal and non-youth related church stuff), conflicts arise.

One such conflict is happening next week.  I forgot to include my National Youth Gathering planning meeting in the master master calendar.  So it means I won’t be at the Baptismal Remembrance event for our Cornerstone Youth, nor will we be doing a winter camping trip with the High School.  The Crossroads youth probably are ok with that since we’re doing Lasertron instead.

I’m really frustrated with myself for the scheduling conflict, and not looking forward to the trip.  In addition to missing a cool youth event, I’ll also be missing 4 days of Addison’s young life.  My first (of many, I’m sure!) time away from Addison will undoubtedly be difficult.  Please pray that I’ll have a better attitude about going on this trip!

Early Morning

Well, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. this morning to finish getting packed for my trip to New Orleans for the National Youth Gathering planning meeting.  I hate getting up this early because it messes with my schedule.  I’ll probably not be feeling well all day now because of it.  Thankfully, I get to N.O. by 10:30, which means I’ll be at the hotel by 11:30 with nothing to do until late afternoon.  A nap is already sounding good.

I hope to update while I’m gone, but in the meantime you can follow me on Twitter.  I’ll be tweeting (the verb form of twitter) while away.  My Twitter has updates from me (duh!), but you can also follow Sue on there as well.
